Warm, Stretchy, Breathable and Weather Resistant Fleece: Patagonia R1 TechFace Hoody Review
Looking for a comfortable, stylish fleece that can be worn on the couch or on a night out, or a mountain top? I have put the Patagonia R1 TechFace Hoody to the test to see if it will do just that.
My initial reaction to the revised R1 TechFace hoody after seeing it in the Outter Limits store was definitely very positive. I had previously seen the original R1 hoody, but it never really caught my eye or grabbed my attention. After Patagonia created the alternative version, they created a sleeker looking fleece hoody that I could really get behind. And since purchasing the fleece hoody it has been very hard to take it off.
The R1 TechFace Hoody comes in both women’s and men’s styles with a variety of colours for a cool $225 (CAD) compared to $209 for the non TechFace version.
Patagonia R1 TechFace Hoody Review
Best Uses: From Chilly Runs to Cozy Movie Nights
Patagonia has come out with a variety of fleeces over the years from heavy weight like the windproof Classic Retro-X Fleece Jacket all the way down to the baseline Los Gatos 1⁄4-Zip. The R1 TechFace series offers a happy medium while also being one of the most technical pieces out of the Patagonia fleeces. This fleece has a very nice next to skin feeling with the lightweight double-weave fabric while also being DWR treated to shed light rain or snow.
Material: Very Breathable and Stretchy
After wearing the TechFace R1 hoody for some time now and taking it on many runs I am yet to see any issues with durability, which comes with no surprise coming from a brand like Patagonia.
Patagonia’s products are some of the
most ethically sourced on the market
and the R1 TechFace is no different, it is
made out of the 92% polyester (69%
recycled) and 8% elastane for that breathability. Not only does the hoody have recycled materials but the fabric is certified as bluesign approved and the hoody itself is Fair Trade Certified sewn.
Like most Patagonia pieces the R1 hoody is true to size, meaning I wear a medium in all Patagonia tops and a medium in this fit perfectly. The fit has a nice taper and a wonderful hugging feeling but still allows for another layer underneath it if you so choose. I typical pair it just with a shirt and that works perfectly. Although I don’t often wear the hood because of its technical look it is still superior in comfort and weather resistance (but maybe not the looks department).
The technicality and quality of this fleece continues to provide me a happy medium for the colder run days or super chill quarantine days where I am just doing things around the house. For me this has been one of my best recent purchases, its versatility and ability to be worn in mild snow or windy conditions is amazing and I will continue to wear it daily going into spring (second winter?)
